Creationism: Still Crazy After All These Years

Eugenie Scott describes the evolving history of the antievolution movement in the United States, from attempts to balance the teaching of evolution with “creation science” or “intelligent design” to the present spate of stealth creationist tactics such as “academic freedom” and (in Texas) “all sides of scientific evidence.”

Scott is an American physical anthropologist who has been the executive director of the National Center for Science Education (NCSE) since 1987. She is a leading critic of young earth creationism and intelligent design.

An excellent break down of the various tactics and arguments used by creationism advocates to try and get creationism taught in schools. In my opinion the use of such under handed and dishonest tactics proves that creationism has no place in the scientific class room, if it did why would they have to intentionally confuse and complicate the argument with legal jargon and double speak? We do not relax scientific standards simply because some belief is popular, conforms to tradition, or was revealed to someone trough devine revelation- to do so would completely undermine and destroy both the utility and spirit of scientific endeavor.
I live in the South-Eastern U.S., the bible belt, and I hold a degree in chemistry. Due to the fact that I changed my major many times and moved around alot I spent several years in different colleges and attended three different high schools before graduating. Never once in the course of that education did any one teach me the first thing about evolution, in either high school or college. I was never taught creationism either, they knew they couldn’t go that far without legal repercussions- but they refused to teach evolution, and many of them still refuse to teach it to this day. Yes, it is a official part of the state curriculum but, they find ways around that very easily. They just say they ran out of time and couldn’t cover it or that too many parents and students objected, and it is intentionally overlooked at the state level. Our own senator has publicly admitted he doesn’t believe in evolution and, recieved much praise and support for doing so from the redkneck, backward population that lives here. My college (so called) professors brought outside, unapproved materials into the calss room constantly, materials that pushed the consevative, evangelic, republican/ tea party point of view. Its sickening, and there is nothing sane people can do to stop it at the moment, at least not where I live (Alabama). This has to stop!!!
