When I was younger I had friends who wore the bands shirts that just say “Tool.” I pointed out that this is likely the band calling you a “tool” for purchasing and advertising such memorabilia. Even if that idea isn’t literally true I’d imagine the band members would agree with the premise.

When it comes to inventing a genre, and making their music a small piece of a bigger picture (especially considering their close kinship with Alex Grey) they are unparalleled in the music world.

Loved it, I have been hearing this stiff every since I got into mathematics. Many of the myths i had already layed to rest in my own mind but, I still was holding on to the nautilus shell. I had never been curious enough about the art myths to check them out. Tool, a popular rock band, used the Fibinacci sequence as a theme for one of their albums. It was embedded both in the syllables of the lyrics and the percussion. Thats the only art reference I had checked out and it turned out to be true. I really hate the nautilus shell thing, that was my favorite example of the sequence showing up in nature. Still it is way cool to finally have a valid reason for why it does show up in flower pedals and fractal patterns like trees. This irrational number lets nature repeat itself in fractal fashiion but insures the patternis are so huge and complex as to give the impression of never ending randomness. Not only that but the ratio insures the growth pattern while looking random takes advantage of the available resources in a sytematically efficient way, whether the resource is sunlight or available growth space. Mathematical logic is powerful, look what such a simple little rule can accomplish.
